Why the Right Brush Size Matters

A floor scrubber brush that is the wrong size does not simply clean worse — it can damage the machine. A brush that is too large will not seat on the driver plate, wobbles during rotation, and overloads the brush motor. A brush that is too small leaves uncleaned strips along the edges and forces the operator to make extra passes. Getting the size right the first time is the difference between a brush that lasts six months and one that fails in six weeks.

The Three Measurements You Need

Every replacement brush is defined by three numbers. Write all three down before you order.

How to Measure Your Brush (5 Steps)

You do not need special tools. A tape measure and a marker are enough.

• 1. Remove the brush from the machine. Raise the deck or release the retainer clip first — never measure while the brush is mounted.
• 2. Measure the diameter across the center for disc brushes. Lay the brush flat and measure the widest point straight across the middle.
• 3. Measure the length for cylindrical and roller brushes. Measure tip to tip along the brush body, not the shaft.
• 4. Measure the center hole. Measure the inside diameter of the mounting hole, then count the drive lugs (the raised tabs that lock into the driver plate).
• 5. Photograph the brush next to the tape measure. A photo with the measurement visible lets any supplier confirm the spec, even without a brand name.

Five Sizing Mistakes That Cost Money

These are the mistakes we see most often when customers order replacement brushes.

• 1. Measuring the machine, not the brush. The deck opening is larger than the brush. Always measure the brush itself.
• 2. Forgetting the lug pattern. Two brushes can share a diameter but use a different number of drive lugs and will not fit.
• 3. Confusing diameter with radius. A 10 in radius is a 20 in brush, not a 10 in brush.
• 4. Ordering by machine brand only. Brands change suppliers between production years — a 2021 T5 and a 2024 T5 may use different mountings.
• 5. Ignoring bristle length. A longer trim changes brush pressure and can overload the motor on some decks.
